Nessie and Georgie, accompanied by their humans, went to Cairns last week to give a talk and demonstration to Legacy, Cairns. It was a very hot day but the dogs enjoyed the comfort of overhead fans in the R.S.L. and the appreciation shown by the audience, they love the applause! On Sunday we went to Rocky Creek at the invitation of the National Servicemen’s Association and enjoyed a picnic lunch with them. Again it was very hot but no one minded the heat. The National Servicemen’s League have worked incredibly hard and presented ASDOGS with a large cheque, thank you ladies’ for all your hard work, it is greatly appreciated. I, personally feel it is a great honour that we receive help from these wonderful people.
The National Servicemen’s Association have adopted one of our puppies, called Digger, and will sponsor him and he will visit them as he grows up. Digger will live in Tolga. Dusty will be seen around the Malanda area with his puppy carer so do stop and say hello to him.
Pam and Bonnie will be selling raffle tickets in our Easter Raffle outside the Yungaburra Supamarket on Yungaburra Market Day. The Easter Eggs have been hand made for us by a sponsor in Townsville and look delicious so come and buy a ticket for only $1.
The week of March 19th -23rd is the ANZ Blue Week and the Mareeba Branch of the ANZ Bank have chosen ASDOGS as their charity. It will be an exciting week and some of us will be at the bank every day.
In our “spare time” dogs are being trained either at our grounds or in shopping centres in Cairns or on the Tableland.
We need more people to help train the dogs and new members are always welcome. Phone Faye on 40 921816 or Ann on 40 965118

ASDOGS is an Association run entirely by volunteers and receives no Government funding. Like so many charities in this modern day and age we desperately need volunteers. What do we do? We train dogs for people, adults and children, with physical disabilities so that they can achieve greater independence.
How?
If you are in a wheelchair and you drop your bank card whilst out shopping it is very demoralising to have to ask someone to help and you would be amazed at the public “out there” who get embarrassed when asked to help. With a dog by your side you just have to tell it to “Fetch” and the dog will pick up the article and give it to you. It will put its front paws on the counter and give the check out attendant the card and carry the groceries to the car walking alongside the wheelchair.
Dogs can be trained to do so many tasks, they can open and close doors (with a rope on the door), take bottles of water from the fridge, turn on lights, carry the phone, empty the clothes drier and many other tasks and it is incredibly rewarding to see a dog that you have trained with its recipient.
How can you help?
We need two puppy carers for these delightful puppies. They are Golden Retriever cross and will be ready to go in about two weeks.
What do you have to do?
Give them a loving home for approx twelve months, (all Veterinary fees are paid by the Association) and attend training classes given by our qualified instructors. Keep training them at home about ten minutes a day and socialise them as much as possible.
Yes, you will have to hand them over for further training unless, hopefully you decide to help with the training but what a worthwhile cause to help someone and have fun doing it!
Have a look at our Web Site: http:/www.asdogsnq.org and then phone Faye on 40 921816
Dusty and Digger come with trampoline beds, orange jackets, brush and feed bowls and lots of love.
Please help.

Great Wheelbarrow Race 2007
Written by asdogs Friday, 23 February 2007 18:40
The Mareeba Centre for Tropical Agriculture [CTA] has put in an entry for the Great Wheelbarrow Race 2007 and chosen ASDOGS (NQ) Inc. as the charity group to raise funds for. CTA has over 120 staff in 4 government departments [QDPI&F, QDNR, EPA & AQIS NAQS], all of which are involved with the race entry. The race, from Mareeba to Chillagoe will be held over 3 days, May 18 to May 20. Each race team is allowed 10 'pushers' and one support vehicle. Each team are provided with a standard Kelso wheelbarrow so that each team faces the same challenge.Fund raising events have started already including selecting a team name [$1 an entry] which was won by 'Mad As Dogs'. Subsequently CTA is selling dried mangoes and has even had a cane toad race where all entries have donated $2 for their amphibious steed. The team is now in training and has already called on ASDOGS Publicity dog Max for help.
Check out the photos and revisit the website news section regularly for further updates!
